This painting by Simkin shows a mounted officer of the 1st Bombay Cavalry, the officer being identified as Captain Newport Tinley. However, Simkin was not known for portrait painting; his officers are invariably similar looking upper-class men with moustaches. The date of the painting is 1883 but by 1880 the regiment had converted to lancers. This is a light cavalry uniform, worn before the change to lancers; a cavalry grey tunic whereas the lancer uniform was dark green with red facings. Simkin has painted blue facings although the Bombay regular cavalry regiments all had white facings.
However, the uniform cannot be dismissed as entirely wrong as it does show the uniform as it had developed from that shown in the 1874 painting, and just prior to the change to green lancer uniform. The breeches are dark blue with silver lace stripes, and the sabretache conforms to the photos of officers in 1878. The white spiked helmet has a coloured lungi wrapped around it. The horse furniture shows a red throat plume.
