The 1st Bombay Cavalry reverted to the role of lancers c1880 and this excellent watercolour shows the drill uniform consisting of a khaki thigh length kurta which had a row of pockets for ammunition placed at an angle each side of the chest. The steel chains worn on the shoulders were copied by the British cavalry regiments two decades later. The brown leather waist belt supported his sword, and was worn over a red kummerband. The breeches were a different shade to the kurta and worn with black puttees and brown ankle boots. The lungi was blue and gold striped on the right side, plain dark blue on the left, and wrapped around a red kullah.
