British officers of the 1st Bombay Lancers wore two types of dress uniform; Indian style kurta and lunghi, worn when on parade with the men, and British style lancer uniform when not on parade. Both uniforms were basically green with scarlet facings; in 1903 they were changed to blue and scarlet. This photo of Major Henry Hay shows the British lancer uniform, green with a scarlet plastron front and scarlet collar and cuffs. The collar is covered with gold lace on the top and bottom. Officers below the rank of major had lace on the top and front only. The cuffs of field officers had two rows of gold lace. He wears a gold laced pouch-belt with a red central stripe. The regiment was distinguished by having a silver elephant boss for the chains, and in line with other Bombay cavalry regiments, a whistle on the other end of the chains instead of pickers. He has gold cord cap-lines around his body which end up around his neck when bare-headed or in an undress cap. When wearing the white helmet, the lines would be attached to the back of the headgear. He has a medal which is probably the India Medal 1849-95 with a red and blue striped ribbon, and two clasps. The regiment certainly earned a clasp for BURMA 1887-89.
