Edward Locke Elliot was born on 28 Jan 1850, the son of Colonel Edward King Elliot. He was educated at Harrow and went to RMC Sandhurst, passing out as an officer in the 108th Regiment on 22 Jan 1868. He joined the 1st Bombay Lancers in 1870 and was 2nd Squadron subaltern on 5 Nov. By 1876 he was officiating Adjutant. The photo shows him as a lieutenant in the 1st Bombay Lancers in 1878 wearing a patrol jacket. He served in the Third Burma War of 1885-87 and was promoted to Captain on 22 Jan 1886 before they set off for Burma. He was mentioned in Despatches and awarded the DSO. He was promoted to Major on 22 Jan 1888 and appointed Commandant of the regiment on 6 Dec 1889. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel on 22 Jan 1894 and served in the Dongola Expeditionary Force in 1896. He was a staff officer in the Boer War and for his services knighted as a KCB. He retired in 1911 with the rank of Lieutenant-General, but served in WW1 as a military advisor. He was married in 1893 to Eva Sybil Smith, daughter of Colonel Percy Smith. They had one daughter. He died at the Coppice in Nottingham on 12 December 1938.
