The riding instructor is an Indian NCO showing two stripes and a spur badge which was used in the cavalry to denote Rough Rider or riding instructor. The rank of corporal was known as naik in the Indian army. He wears a dark blue stable jacket with orange facings and white lace around the edges. Up to c1835 two types of stable jacket were worn; dark blue and French grey. He has brass shoulder scales. The peakless forage cap is also dark blue with a white cap band and white piping around the top. He wears white breeches and black jackboots with spurs.
The trainee rider is wearing breeches and boots but only a shirt and skull cap. He is riding without stirrups which have been crossed over in front of the saddle.
