British Empire Title

4th Bengal Light Cavalry

Officer’s Sabretache c1840

British officers of the 4th BLC wore this sabretache in dress uniform. The dark blue cloth face is decorated with a silver lace edge of Train and Vellum pattern. The lettering in the middle is a monogram BLC with foliated decoration, all in silver. The Two battle honours are; on the left, LASARREE and on the right, BHURTPOOR. The spellings of both battles vary. ‘Laswaree’ was awarded 26 years after the battle, on 23 Feb 1829, and ‘Bhurtpore’ was awarded only 4 months after the siege, on 30 May 1826. The next award was in 1844, for Maharajpore in the 1843 Gwalior campaign. So this sabretache would seem to date between 1826 and 1844. However, the crown, which is of gold embroidery and red silk cushions, is Victorian, making the date after 1837.
