Gold lace covered the Prussian collar of officer’s jackets so that only a small amount of green cloth showed at the back. The gold epaulette, which has a thistle embroidered on it, indicates that the officer is in a battalion company. Flank company officers wore wings as seen in the portrait of Lt-Colonel Robert Ferguson. The white shoulder belt has a belt-plate introduced in 1840. He has a crimson sash on his left shoulder. The officer in this portrait is named as Ensign James Robertson who joined the regiment on 29 Feb 1841. He was promoted to lieutenant on 14 April 1843 and left the regiment in July 1849.
