This is a well-preserved example of a scarlet jacket worn by officers in battalion companies of the 79th Cameron Highlanders in the early years of the Crimean War. The green facings are to be found on the collar and round cuffs. The front of the collar is covered with gold lace, forming button-hole loops for the two gilt buttons on each side. The cuffs have scarlet cloth slash flaps, almost totally covered in gold lace with four gilt buttons. The hem of the jacket has an edging of gold lace that carries on at the back, edging white turn-backs. The tails have false pocket flaps similar to the cuff flaps, covered in gold lace. The elaborate gold epaulettes have embroidered thistles inside the gilt metal crescent.
