This side view of a sergeant of the 79th Highlanders, reading to a sailor and seated man, shows a green hackle of the light company on the side of his feather bonnet. The green facings of his jacket are most visible on the collar and cuffs but are also seen as backing cloth to his silver rank stripes. His rank entitles him to wear a broadsword slung in the same manner as the officers, from a white shoulder belt. His crimson sash is also in the bunched style of an officer. The side view shows how his fly plaid hangs from his left shoulder and hooks up to his waist. The green and red hose are kept in place with scarlet garters that form elaborate bows. The buckled shoes were worn in review order, and his sporran, although not clear, is of grey goat-hair with five black tassels.
