This hand-coloured photo shows the 1855 uniform worn by Edward Everett soon after joining the 79th Cameron Highlanders. He was awarded the DSO for his part in the battle of Ginnis in 1885, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel commanding the regiment from 1887 to 1890.
The doublet he wears was introduced for Highland regiments by General Order in January 1855. It was double breasted with two rows of diamond-shaped gilt buttons, of scarlet cloth but with green facings. The green collar was rounded at the front and had a rank badge of an embroidered star on each side. The cuffs, also green, were round with a green slash flap that had three gilt buttons and gold braid loops. There was half-inch gold lace around the top of the collar and the round part of the cuff. There was also green facing colour on the inside of the front of the jacket so that they could be folded back to form lapels. The shoulders had simple gold cord loops with a small button.
His broadsword is attached to slings which are part of the white shoulder belt. His dirk is attached to a plain waist-belt worn under the doublet. He has a kilt with a large goat-hair sporran that has six gold cord tassels. The green and red hose are half covered by white spats and his ostrich feather bonnet is beside him with a white hackle.
