The differences between the six Highland regiments can be compared in this photo. From the left of the photo:
The Black Watch (Royal Highland regiment) (42nd and 73rd Foot) blue facings
The Highland Light Infantry (71st and 74th Foot) buff facings
The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-Shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany’s) (72nd and 78th Foot) buff facings
The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (79th Foot) blue facings
The Gordon Highlanders (75th and 92nd Foot) yellow facings
Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) (91st and 93rd Foot) yellow facings
The three on the right are all Colour Sergeants. The Black Watch and Camerons have medals for Egypt and Sudan. The HLI was the only Highland regiment not kilted, but their distinctive uniform ceased to be unique as Lowland regiments adopted uniforms with trews. The kilted regiments were distinguished by their sporrans and differing tartan setts. But they also had subtler differences in the pleating of the kilt and the number of ‘foxtails’ on the feather bonnet.
