The shoulder plaid in this photo is worn in levée dress, pinned at the shoulder and showing a fringed end hanging at the front. His rank is unclear on his gold shoulder cords but the single lining of gold lace on his cuff, without a braid edging indicates that he is a lieutenant or second lieutenant. Lieutenants had a star badge but second lieutenants had no badge until 1902. The black patent leather shoes have a buckle and were worn for mess and social events. He has a dress belt around his waist for his ornate dirk. He appears to have a medal which must be for the war in Egypt.
