The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders spent six years in Malta and Gibraltar before taking part in the Kitchener’s Expedition to the Sudan in 1898. The illustration shows an officer wearing a khaki drill jacket with a rise-and-fall collar, and the early version of the Sam Browne belt that had two shoulder straps. His broadsword is in a brown leather scabbard slotted into a leather frog. A pistol holster was usually worn attached to the right side. The white strap supports a haversack for rations, but this would later be dyed khaki. The sporran is an undress version, similar to the one worn by the men. This order of dress was also worn when the regiment was sent to South Africa in 1900.
