Simkin’s painting of a Cameron Highlander shows the uniform at the beginning of the Boer War. This private wears the foreign service khaki drill jacket, designed for kilted regiments, with the front rounded off to allow the sporran to be seen. However the uniform was to some extent experimental for most regiments. The Cameron Highlanders had already served overseas in khaki, in 1897 when they fought in the Sudan. This soldier wears the Slade Wallace valise equipment but this may have been adapted for long treks so that bandoliers would have been used to carry ammunition. The kilt would have been covered with a khaki apron.
