From 1926 to 1934 the 2nd Battalion was stationed in Scotland. In the summer of 1928 they took part in a route march from Fort George to Lochaber, then returned to Edinburgh. The total distance marched was 250 miles. They are wearing kilts but no sporrans. They are in shirt-sleeve order and have packs on their chests which contain a respirator. This was worn by the infantry during the inter-war years as so many casualties in WW1 had been victims of enemy gas attacks. Haversacks containing rations are attached to the webbing waist-belt on the left hip. The Tam O’Shanter, or bonnet TOS, is worn by all ranks. A photo of the 5th (Service) Battalion on a ceremonial parade in Cologne in 1919 shows the men wearing the bonnet TOS while the officers wear the glengarry.
