Men of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders are here being trained on the Vickers Machine Gun, a weapon that had been used by British soldiers since WW1. The photo was taken in 1960 and comes from the National Army Museum website. All ranks wear a battledress blouse and trousers, a uniform introduced in 1938 and worn throughout the war. The officer and the trainee gunner are almost indistinguishable, except that the officer, leaning over, has a rank badge on his shoulder strap. By this time, the blouse was pressed back at the neck so that a shirt and tie are shown and the lapels permanently flat. No collar badges were worn but all ranks have a flash of tartan on the shoulder as well as a patch of tartan behind the bonnet badge. In both cases this is the Cameron of Erracht tartan.
