Adam Maitland was born on 20 April 1827, the son of Hon Thomas Maitland of Dundrennan, a Senator of the College of Justice (died 1851). His mother was Isabella Graham McDowall. Adam joined the 79th as an ensign on 9 June 1846. He was promoted to lieutenant on 11 June 1847. He died of cholera in the Crimea on 7 Oct 1854. This portrait of him is a detail from a group of officers and men of the regiment on the Mills Mount Battery, Edinburgh Castle, painted in 1852 by R R McIan. He wears an undress scarlet shell jacket which has a green collar and cuffs. This is worn with trews and a glengarry cap showing a regimental badge. He has a civilian coat over his uniform.
A memorial column in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh commemorates him along with six other officers of the 79th Highlanders who died in the Crimea. His name is inscribed as Captain Adam Maitland which may have been a promotion in the field as this is not mentioned in the regimental history.
