Garnet Wolseley’s expedition against Coffee Calcalli, ‘the truculent king of Ashanti’ involved hard trekking through jungle terrain. Native porters were employed but after a march inland of 30 miles the porters deserted at Mansu. The soldiers were obliged to carry their own supplies and drag artillery pieces. The Highlanders wore clothing suitable for a campaign in West Africa, khaki jackets, breeches, leather gaiters and helmets with neck curtains.
