Officers in undress wore a blue single-breasted frock-coat that was plain, apart from eight gilt buttons down the front and the two small ones on each cuff. The one embellishment was this pair of expensive shoulder straps. They conform to the 1834 Dress Regulations in having an embroidered thistle badge inside the gilt crescent, a badge authorised for all Highland regiments, but the 79th had a tradition of wearing gold lace with a zig-zag pattern. The straps are also recognisable as 79th because of the small regimental button. The embroidered Hanoverian crown indicates that these straps were worn by a lieutenant-colonel. Majors had a star, and colonels a crown and star. Captains and subalterns had no rank badge.
