British Empire Title

The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders

Regimental Badge, pre-1873

This regimental badge was photographed in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh and posted on flickr by Leo Reynolds in 2016. The date of the badge is known only to those familiar with the actual monument which probably commemorates a war involving the men of the Cameron Highlanders. As the title does not include ‘Queen’s Own’, the date must be pre-1873. The crown is Victorian so the date is somewhere between 1837 and 1873. The Sphinx at the base is always present with this style of badge, although there is no EGYPT beneath the figure, and the Sphinx is not wearing Ancient Egyptian headdress. After 1881 this pattern badge replaced the numerals with a Thistle. The Cross of St Andrew was retained.
