Siege of Burgos

Burgos Castle in the north of Spain was an important supply base occupied by French troops commanded by General Dubreton. This painting by François Joseph Heim shows French soldiers working hard inside the castle, and hauling guns up a slope to the battlements. The formidable citadel has high arched openings stacked with wooden beams used for building the redoubts or horn-works just beyond the outside walls.
