Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born in Corfu on 10 June 1921. He was the son of the exiled Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, his mother being Princess Alice of Battenberg. He married Princess Elizabeth on 20 Nov 1947 and on that day was titled Duke of Edinburgh. When she became Queen on 6 Feb 1952 he was her Consort. On the day of the coronation, 2 June 1953, he was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was created a British Prince in 1957. When the Seaforths and Camerons amalgamated on 7 Feb 1961 he was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen’s Own Highlanders, Seaforth and Camerons. He remained Colonel-in-Chief when the QOH amalgamated with the Gordon Highlanders in 1994. In 2006 the Scottish regiments became the Royal Regiment of Scotland whose Colonel-in-Chief was Queen Elizabeth II, but Prince Philip continued as Colonel-in-Chief of The Highlanders, 4th Battalion RRS until his death on 9 April 2021.
