Augustus de Segur McKerrell was born in 1863, the son of Robert and Emily McKerrell of Hillhouse, Ayrshire. He fought in Egypt in 1882 for which he received the medal and Khedive’s Star along with the Order of the Medjidie. He was a lieutenant in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders on 23 Aug 1884. He was promoted to captain 2 Aug 1892 and major 21 May 1899. On the same date he was awarded a brevet of lieutenant-colonel for his services in the Sudan, and was also awarded the Order of Osmanieh. On 10 Feb 1904 he received a brevet of colonel. He was promoted to substantive lieutenant-colonel on 3 April 1910, commanding the 2nd Battalion until April 1912, and attended the Delhi Durbar in 1911 for which he received a medal. He was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath. After leaving the regiment he was a staff officer and appointed to the command of the Tay Defence Garrison with the rank of brigadier-general. He died in Dundee on 24 April 1916. A memorial to Brigadier-General McKerrell can be seen in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh.
