This group of pipers shows the commanding officer, probably Lt Col McFarlan with the Sergeant Piper and 20 pipers. They are in livery order, with buckled shoes instead of boots and white spats as worn on parade. The shoulder plaids are worn over the black patent leather shoulder belt and the sporran cantles can be seen to be special to the pipers but differing from the Sergeant Piper. The official establishment in the 1890s allowed for a Sergeant Piper and five pipers, the rest were unofficial, paid for by the officers, which indicates how wealthy the officers of the Cameron Highlanders had to be. The photo was taken at Tidworth and was reproduced in Regiment magazine in Sept 1999.
