The date of this photo is not known. It can be seen on the Great War Forum where it was discussed in 2020. The uniform is correct for the Cameron Highlanders but the tunic is not the piper’s doublet as worn in the years before, and after, the photo was taken. The skirts are similar in cut to the skirts of the khaki service dress although there are hip pockets that are short versions of the Inverness skirts of the doublet.
One contributor to the forum says this is dated soon after the Boer War but the piper has no medals for South Africa. He also says he was probably 2nd Battalion which served overseas in this period. The Army Lists tell us that the 2nd Battalion were in Gibraltar in 1902, Inverness in 1909 and Bangalore, India in 1913. The background could place the photo in Gibraltar or India.
