The artist Mitchell Nolte has painted the 79th from the point of view of the French infantry threatened by the bayonets of the front rank. The 79th were selected to drive the enemy skirmishers back in the afternoon of 16 June 1815. Later on they had to form a square to repel cavalry. The Colours are carried in the middle of the mass of Highlanders. These were actually the Colours of the 2nd Battalion, borrowed for the Waterloo campaign because the 1st Battalion Colours were in such bad condition after the rigours of the Peninsula War.
