The action of the 79th Cameron Highlanders at Toulouse inspired this painting made by Harry Payne 100 years later. It shows an ensign carrying the green Regimental Colour of the 79th Cameron Highlanders, closely guarded by a Colour Sergeant. The painting is based on a print made by Charles Hamilton Smith in 1813 of an ensign and Colour sergeant of the 9th or East Norfolk Regiment. The Colour, together with the King’s Colour was presented to the 1st Bn 79th in 1794 and not replaced until 1815.The artist has made a mistake with the Union flag in the upper canton as it includes the red cross of St Patrick which was not added until after the Act of Union with Ireland in 1801. Also the centre of the Colour should have the regimental number 79, not a thistle which was the badge of the regiment, albeit with a crown above, after 1873.
