The skean dhu, or sgian dubh, is not a regimental weapon of great antiquity. It was worn in Highland regiments from the 1840s, tucked into the hose on the right side. The photos show two examples of 79th pattern skean dhus, one sheathed and one unsheathed. They are identified as being 79th Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders by the Sphinx battle honour. Officers and pipers of the regiment wore them as well as the RSM, bandmaster and drum-major.
