General Tombs and Staff 1865

Brigadier-General Sir Henry Tombs VC KCB sits facing the camera, on the left of the photo in this group. He was a very brave and popular soldier, a hero of the Indian Mutiny, having won the VC while serving as an officer in the Bengal Horse Artillery, for saving the life of a fellow officer twice. He was regarded as the handsomest officer in the Indian army and was highly sought-after by the young ladies. His bravery bordered on the reckless but he was totally lacking in arrogance. He was born in Calcutta in Nov 1825 but did not live long. He died on 2 Aug 1874 at Newport, Isle of Wight.
