British Empire Title

9th Bengal Light Cavalry

Surrender of Bhurtpore

Lord Combermere receives the surrender of Doorjun Saul, the usurping Raja of Bhurtpore in this sketch made by William Heath in 1826. Behind Combermere is an officer of the Bengal Horse Artillery, wearing a helmet with a red flowing mane. An infantry officer is in a red coat next to him. The background figure between Combermere and the Horse Artillery officer is probably an officer of the Bengal Light Cavalry. The scene never took place because Doorjun Saul was already a prisoner, having been captured by the 8th BLC on 18 Jan 1826 the day that the fortress was captured. However the siege ended with the complete victory of the British/Indian force and total surrender of the garrison of Bhurtpore.
