Archibald Lorne Campbell


Archibald Lorne Campbell was born in Patna on 17 Dec 1804. He was the son of Duncan Campbell, 5th of Inverneill, Collector of Government Customs at Murshidabad in the Bengal Civil Service. His mother was Elizabeth Cooper from Gravesend, Kent. He was a cadet in 1820, arriving in India on 5 Nov 1821 and posted to the 1st BLC. He was promoted to lieutenant on 13 May 1825 and captain on 12 Jan 1834, going on furlough from 30 Dec 1825 to 7 Feb 1839. In the First Afghan War he was in General Pollock’s army of retribution and the recapture of Kabul. He fought at Maharajpore on 29 Dec 1843. In the First Sikh War he was at Aliwal as Brigade Major of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade. At Sobraon he had his horse shot from under him while he was ADC to Major-General Sir Robert Dick. He was promoted to Major on 20 Oct 1852, and Lieutenant-Colonel on 17 Sep 1855, then transferred to the 10th BLC in 1856. On 2 Jan 1857 he was again transferred, to command the 9th BLC at Sailkote where the right wing of the regiment mutinied. He served in the 3rd Bengal European Light Cavalry with the rank of brevet Colonel, then transferred to the 2nd BELC in 1859.

He retired on 31 Dec 1861 with the rank of Honorary Major-General and died in Edinburgh on 25 May 1883. He was married twice, first to Charlotte Susan Dick on 3 Apr 1838 at Calcutta. She died at Meean Meer on 31 Oct 1857. His second wife was Jemima Paterson who lived to the age of 81 and died in Brighton on 30 Mar 1918. They lived at 13 Melville Street, Edinburgh.
