British Empire Title

9th Bengal Light Cavalry

Officer’s Sabretache 1843

The sabretaches worn by British officers of the Bengal Light Cavalry followed a straightforward style of blue cloth surrounded by silver lace, in this case herringbone train pattern, and embroidered in silver. The regimental number IX surmounted the monogram BLC with the three battle honours below. The first battle honour BHURTPORE was granted in 1826, and the Sind campaign took place in 1843 where the regiment earned the honours for MEEANEE and HYDERABAD (the only BLC regiment to do so). The award for these last two was also in 1843 so the sabretache dates after then. This sketch was made by W Y Carman in 1961 and published in his book on Indian Army Uniforms. The caption says that the original sabretache was in the Royal United Services Institute museum.
