Philip Francis Story


Philip Francis Story was born in London on 22 Dec 1807. He was the son of the Rev Philip Laycock Story of Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire. His mother was Lydia Baring, sister of Alexander, 1st Lord Ashburton. He was a cadet in 1824 and arrived in India on 20 Oct 1825. He was posted to the 9th BLC in 1826 and commanded the regiment with the rank of captain from 21 Dec 1835 to 11 June 1836. He was promoted to major on 28 Oct 1842 and led the regiment on the Sind Campaign, fighting at Meenee and Hyderabad in 1843, for which he was appointed CB on 4 July 1843. He was promoted to Lt-Colonel on 2 Oct 1851 and transferred to command the 3rd BLC in Nov 1852 and again to the 6th BLC in Dec 1853. He was appointed to command at Cawnpore on 17 Feb 1854 with the rank of brevet colonel, until August 1856. He was then unemployed in India for some years, and was on furlough from 16 Feb 1870. He was a Major-General on 13 April 1855, Lieutenant General on 6 Mar 1868, General on 17 Nov 1873, and retired on 31 Dec 1877. He died on 13 Feb 1885 aged 76. He lived at Glebeside, Preston, Brighton. He was married to Ann Rich on 27 Oct 1834 at Karnal. She lived to the age of 70, and died at Massoorie on 6 May 1881.
