During the 1830s the rank-and-file had worn a universal pattern star badge but this was changed in 1839 to this round brass shape surrounded by a wreath, laurel on the right and oak leaves on the left. The plain number 9 was central with a crown above the circle. Grenadier companies had a similar badge but the centre had a flaming grenade and smaller number, while the light companies had a stringed bugle and small number. This pattern of badge remained in use until 1855.
