This photo was probably taken in South Africa, showing the dress uniform of a youthful band musician. He must have started his band career as a young boy because he has a good conduct stripe on his left arm. One stripe was for 2 years service. His scarlet tunic has white facings with Britannia badges on each side of his collar. The shoulder wings are striped with plain white tape. His white helmet has a yellow pagri wrapped around it, and the brass chain chin-strap is hooked up to the back of the helmet. The 1st Battalion served in South Africa from 1904 until 1907, and the 2nd Battalion joined them in 1905 until 1908 when they went to Gibraltar.
