This illustrated page from The History of the Norfolk Regiment vol 2 by F Loraine Petre (Jarrold 1925) shows ancient Colours of the regiment dating back to the American War of Independence. The title of Saratoga Colours refers to the surrender of the British under General Burgoyne’s command, to the American colonists at Saratoga in 1777. The Regimental Colour (dated here as 1759) at the top of the page can be seen at Second Colour 1757 and Regimental Colour 1772 . The King’s Colour below that (dated here as 1767) is described at King’s Colour Centre 1772 where the central part is shown. This view of the whole Colour shows the Union flag before 1800, after which date the red saltire of Ireland was added. The size of these Colours was 6ft 6ins flying by 6ft 2ins on the pike (almost 2 metres square - 1.9812m x 1.8796m). There was no fringe around the edge of Colours until 1868.
