Archibald Graham Wavell

Archibald Graham Wavell was born on 18 Nov 1843 at Somborne in Hampshire. He was the son of Major General Arthur Goodall Wavell and Anne Paxton. He entered the 9th East Norfolk Regiment on 28 July 1863. After promotion to captain in 1878 he served in the Zulu War of 1879. He was appointed CO of the 1st Bn Norfolk Regiment from August 1890 to November 1891 when he exchanged with Lt-Col Howel Gunter to be CO of the 2nd Battalion Black Watch. He retired from the regiment in August 1894, promoted to major-general, and was appointed Assistant Adjutant-General for recruiting at Headquarters, Pall Mall.

He was married in July 1880 to Eliza Bull Percival in Congleton, Cheshire. They had two daughters and a son, Field Marshal Archibald Percival Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell GCB GCSI GCIE CMG MC. Lt-Colonel A G Wavell died at the age of 91 on 2 March 1935 at Christchurch, Hampshire.
