This photo was published in The Ninth Queen’s Royal Lancers 1715 - 1936 by Major E W Sheppard and reproduced again in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research vol. XVIII no.72 (Winter 1939). A private of the 9th Lancers stands outside a locally-built sentry box to guard the camp which is protected by a fence. He has an Afghan coat over his uniform. The blue breeches have a double yellow stripe and are worn with knee boots and spurs. His pill-box forage cap is blue with a scarlet cap band and braid crossing over the top. All we can see of his tunic, or frock, is a low collar and sleeves with two white chevrons on his right forearm for long service and good conduct. There is no way to tell if the tunic has scarlet collar and cuffs. He does not have a sword but is armed with a Martini-Henry carbine and has a pouch-belt over his left shoulder to support a black leather ammunition pouch.
