Ranelagh Team 1910


The 9th Lancers were well represented in the Ranelagh Team that won the Open Championship in America in 1910. Francis Grenfell VC was a 9th officer, killed on 24 May 1915, and his twin brother Riversdale who was an officer in the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry, attached to the 9th Lancers, killed in action on 14 Sep 1914. Lord Hugh Grosvenor was an officer in the 1st Life Guards, killed on 25 Oct 1914. Frederick Agnew Gill was an officer in the 3rd Dragoon Guards from 1893 and rejoined the army in 1914 as a second lieutenant in the Oxfordshire Hussars at the age of 41. Gill was the polo manager at the Ranelagh Club in London. The Earl of Rocksavage was an officer in the 9th Lancers. He and F A Gill survived the war.
