Stanley Reay Theobald


Stanley Reay Theobald joined the 9th Lancers as a 2nd Lieutenant on 8 Sep 1897 and was promoted to lieutenant on 3 Oct 1900 whilst on service in South Africa. He was wounded twice, the first time, on 2 Dec 1900, near Smithfield in which he was lying exposed to enemy fire and had to be rescued by Privates Leutchford and Vincent. The second time he was very seriously wounded on 31 July 1901 during the operations in Cape Colony and died two days later on 2 August.

He was the son of Colonel Percy Theobald of Cheltenham, born in September 1897. His name is inscribed on the Elranor Cross War Memorial at Cheltenham College. The photo is from a group of 9th Lancers officers at Modder River in December 1899.
