Map of Rorke's Drift

The first attack by the Zulus (4) was against the south wall and then against the west and north walls (5). The initial perimeter of mealie bags (1) incorporated the storehouse, the well-built kraal and the hospital, which had loopholes made in the wall for the defenders to fire from. The transverse wall of biscuit boxes (2) formed a smaller area to defend on the east side. The final assault by the Zulus was into the well-built kraal (6) and the wounded were kept safe in the redoubt (3).
