| This illustration was taken from the January 1st 1898 edition of 'The Graphic'. It shows the Northampton regiment fighting off determined assaults at Saran Sar. The tribesmen would wait until they felt they had a decisive advantage before attacking. These hit and run tactics would become familiar in the 20th Century but were frustratingly new in the 19th. |
