Royal Artillery

Mounted Band at Aldershot, 1937

The mounted band dated from 1877 when the RA Brass Band amalgamated with the Royal Horse Artillery Band. The 60 strong band was split in 1886 by order of the Duke of Cambridge so that there could be a band at Aldershot (25 men) and a band at Woolwich (35 men). The Woolwich Mounted Band was broken up in 1887. The band here wears a simpler tunic to the pre-First World War type. The bandmaster has a plain tunic also but retains a different cuff to the normal Austrian knot. The drumhorse can be seen more clearly if you click here.
