60th Regiment of Foot

5th Battalion, 60th Foot

Riflemen, a comparatively new addition to the British Army at this date, were very much a corps d'elite. Organized and trained on a different basis from the rest of the army, and imbued with a spirit of self-sufficiency and self-respect often denied to other soldiers, they were readily distinguishable by their unusual dark green uniforms.

Officers wore an Hussar-type of uniform with the slung pelisse over the shoulder and cavalry-style overalls and considered themselves in every way on a par with the Light Cavalry - only more so. In common with the Hussars, the Rifles lost their pelisse after the Crimean War, when that garment was abolished.

Riflemen moved at a very fast pace, and still do to this day when marching. - a pace which demands the highest physical fitness to maintain for long periods of time.
