Off Duty

It is hard to believe that soldiers would relax in their dress uniform, including the well polished leather belt and medals. They even keep their forage caps on. This illustration shows that the other ranks' forage cap had the regimental bronze badge with a scarlet cloth backing. Two of the men are carrying silver topped sticks which indicates that they are in walking-out dress. In which case they are in public house outside the barracks and would need to maintain a high standard of appearance.
