The Warwickshire Regiment

1st Battalion Parade, Malta 1897

The full dress uniform in tropical climates included a white helmet instead of the blue cloth home service type. The antelope badge was worn on a red patch on the front of the helmet. The tunics are scarlet with blue facings. An officer is at the front of the parade, turning round to address the two men on the left of the picture, who are replacing their bayonets in their frogs.

The photo was published in the Navy and Army Illustrated on 30th April 1898 along with other pictures of the Sudan campaign. It is unlikely that the regiment would have worn this uniform in the Sudan so the photo must have been taken in Malta where they were stationed from 1895 to 1897. The text mentions the action of the Warwicks at Omdurman: 'the gallant regiment...which stormed the Dervish position with its band playing a lively bugle march.'
