Constable in Scarlet Serge, 1878

The tunic is of 1876 pattern with short skirt and rounded front corners. It is plain and scarlet all over, used for everyday working duties but not fatigues. He wears the winter dress fur cap with yellow bag. The uniform was close fitting. His carbine is the '76 Winchester with long forestock and nosecap, introduced in 1878 to replace the single-shot .577 Snider Enfield Mk III. The brown leather holster carried the .450 Adams revolver.
