9th Gurkhas

Officers and Instructors, 1901

This illustrates the Indian Army hierachy well. The men at the back and on either side of the officers stand stiffly to attention while the officers sit, but the Gurkha officer sits less easily than the British officer who is almost languid. All are in full dress, green with black facings, except the officer who has a frock instead of the braided tunic. He has a pocket visible on his left breast but no pockets on his hips. This garment was replaced by the patrol jacket at about this time. The Gurkha officer is a Subadar, as shown by the silver crossed kukris on his collar.
