94th Russell's Infantry

Native Group, 1864

The drummer in the middle wears his drum carriage round his neck instead of across his chest. He has no wings on his shoulders. The two officers either side of him are a jemadar, with a single sword badge on his collar, and a subadar, with crossed swords badge. Their tunics are red with green facings. There are no shoulder cords on the officers' tunics but there are shoulder straps on the other ranks' tunics. The NCOs standing at the back wear their sashes on the left shoulder. The man on the left with musket and bayonet is a light company sepoy, having a bugle badge over his cap badge. The caps are dark blue with a green band. The man on the right, with a mace is not a drum major, but possibly be a headquarters man employed to precede important persons. He has no cap badge, suggesting that he served all the Hyderabad regiments. The man in white may be a native chaplain or a regimental clerk.

The photo was taken by Colonel Acton Havelock, nephew of Sir Henry Havelock of Lucknow fame. Acton, a keen photographer, served in the 1st from 1860 and commanded it until 1887.
