96th Berar Infantry

Officer and Men, 1897

The 1886 dess regulations stipulated the same uniform for British officers in the Hyderabad infantry as in the British infantry, but the summer uniform was to be khaki. Here we have the British officer with native troops in summer uniform. His khaki tunic has gold lace and braid on the sleeve and gold cord shoulder straps. The pouchbelt is plain white leather as is the sword belt, having a gilt clasp. The helmet is khaki with gilt chin-chain, spike and badge. The man next to him is an Indian officer. His turban is striped and he holds a sword. The Indian uniform is all khaki except for the dark green shoulder straps.
